The community of Abingdon, Virginia, is grieving the loss of Ryan Halsey, a devoted firefighter, accomplished pilot, and beloved friend whose kindness and zest for life touched everyone he met. Ryan’s passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of his loved ones and fellow first responders who admired his courage and unwavering commitment to serving others. As a firefighter at Green Spring Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Ryan was known for his bravery and compassion, always rushing to help those in need. His dedication made him a true hero within the community, a man whose spirit will never be forgotten.


A Passion for Flying and Living Fully

Beyond his work as a firefighter, Ryan was a passionate pilot who soared through life with the same determination and joy he brought to every other pursuit. Having served as a pilot in the United States Air Force, Ryan later flew for PSA Airlines, blending his adventurous spirit with his professional career. For Ryan, flying was more than just a job—it was a calling, a way to explore the world and embrace life’s many perspectives. Friends remember him as a man with an old soul, someone who found happiness in simple pleasures like playing the fiddle, sharing stories around a campfire, and making every moment count.


Remembering a Friend, A Brother, A Light

To Ryan’s reenacting friends, fellow firefighters, and all who knew him, he was more than a companion—he was family. His warmth, humor, and authenticity drew people close and created lifelong bonds. “Losing Ryan has left an empty space in my heart,” a close friend shared, “He had a smile that could light up any room and a way of making you feel truly heard.” Another mentor reflected on Ryan’s adventurous life, from veteran to miner to firefighter: “Rest easy, brother. It’s our watch now.” Visitation will be held at Green Springs Church, with a funeral and interment following. Ryan’s legacy of service, bravery, and love continues to shine brightly in the memories of all who loved him. Rest in peace, Ryan. Your watch is complete.
